Liga Femenil kicks off their final matchday as week 14 starts today with some important decisions still to be made. While some teams have already solidified their places in the post-season, four teams are still looking for two tickets to the liguilla.
This is the first season with the new format, a new format that was heavily criticized before it went public. Then it was confirmed by league president Mariana Gutierrez Bernardez that many conversations took place between players, coaches and staff
to decide what is best for player safety. While there is still some controversy behind this format, player safety is the number one priority and it was great to hear that the league president took players into account with this big decision.
Here is an updated list of the group standings before kickoff:
Group A
- Monterrey – 34 Points
- Tigres – 32 Points
- Juárez – 30 Points
- Toluca – 26 Points
- León – 22 Points
- Santos Laguna – 22 Points
- Cruz Azul – 18 Points
- Atlante – 7 Points
- Querétaro – 6 Points
Group B
- Club América – 34 Points
- Chivas – 30 Points
- San Luis – 19 points
- Pumas – 17 Points
- Pachuca – 16 Points
- Atlas – 16 Points
- Tijuana – 11 Points
- Puebla – 4 Points
- Necaxa – 0 Points
Group A is officially locked in with the top four earning their spots in the liguilla, all that’s left is the positioning. Toluca will remain in the fourth spot as they currently have 26 points and a win will give them 29 points but that’s not enough to top Juárez who has 30 points. In fifth and sixth place is Club León and Santos Laguna and this is where the controversy begins. Both teams sit at 22 points with the possibility of finishing the season with 25 points but that’s still not enough to make the post-season. Meanwhile in Group B third, fourth, fifth and sixth place all have less than 22 points currently. León and Santos have played an incredible season, especially Santos who consistently ends at the bottom of the table, yet they will miss out on the liguilla. It’s crazy that some teams in the post season will have fewer points than teams that were left out. Another sad stat is that Necaxa Femenil is likely to end the season without a single win. The club has a huge celebrity ownership group yet those celebrities do not care about the women’s team and it has shown.
Group B is still up for grabs as two tickets to the liguilla remain. Club América and Chivas have already claimed the first two tickets to the post-season while San Luis, Pumas, Pachuca and Atlas are all fighting for the remaining two. Third and fourth place sit 11 points behind second place. That is a crazy stat but what’s even crazier is that whoever claims the last two spots will, statistically speaking, be weaker than fourth and fifth place of Group A. San Luis and Pumas have 19 and 17 points which is less than what León and Santos have at 22 apiece and those two have missed out on the liguilla. This was one of the trade-offs with this new format. Some of the teams that make it to the postseason will have fewer points than teams that did NOT make the postseason. It’s not the fairest of systems, but that is how the cookie crumbles.
All will be decided on Friday as matchday 14 concludes late Friday night. Two tickets are up for grabs with multiple teams vying for those spots. These next two days are going to be massive with multiple things at play for each team, so buckle up Mexico fans and enjoy the chaos!
