AUSTIN — Now through the non-conference schedule, the Texas Longhorns have accumulated a number of injuries, but head coach Steve Sarkisian was able to provide positive injury updates about two of the most high-profile injuries after Saturday’s 30-6 win over the UTSA Roadrunners.
After getting blocked in the back late in the first half, junior edge Colin Simmons stayed on the field for three more plays before spending the second half in a boot on the sidelines.
“I don’t think Colin is serious,” Texas
head coach Steve Sarkisian said after the game. “It was more precautionary to get him out.”
The prognosis was similar for junior safety Kobe Black, who did not dress against the Roadrunners.
“It was really precautionary to not play Kobe tonight, either,” Sarkisian.
So expect Simmons and Black back on the field for next Saturday’s SEC opener against No. 15 Tennessee in Knoxville.
Less clear is the status of other injured players like sophomore tight end Nick Townsend (knee) and sophomore defensive lineman Justus Terry (foot), who both missed the win over UTSA. Townsend sustained his knee injury against Ohio State, while Terry hurt his foot in pregame warmups before the tilt against the Buckeyes and was wearing a boot on Saturday.
“We’ve got Nick Townsend and Justus Terry that we need to get back, too, so we’re down about three guys defensively, one on offense, pretty significant players that hopefully start working their way back,” Sarkisian said.
The Texas head coach has not provided any updates on the status of junior nickel back Xavier Filsaime, who has not dressed for the first three games. Also not dressed against the Roadrunners were freshmen defensive tackles James Johnson and Elijah Ali.
