The first-ever Women’s Professional Baseball League postseason begins today when the No. 1-seed San Francisco Firebells host the Boston Hunters at Robin Roberts Stadium in Springfield, Ill.
San Francisco, led by co-HR champion Keslie Whitmore, finished atop the regular season standings with a 10-5 record. The Firebells beat Boston 13-7 in the regular season finale on Sunday, completing a 5-0 season sweep of the Hunters.
No. 4 Boston went 4-11 in their first season. Despite a challenging start to the season that included a manager change, the Hunters improved thanks to the hot bats of Denver Bryant and Lexi Hastings.
The first round of the playoffs will consist of a best-of-three format with the winner playing in the best-of-five championship that will begin on Sept. 16. Game two of the Boston-S.F. series will take place on Friday, and game three on Sunday if needed.
Side note: If anyone is interested in reading about some history of women’s baseball and my road trip to go see a few WPBL games this summer, here’s a feature I wrote for Kick the Concrete. It’s the first of a three-part series.
First Pitch: 5:30 p.m. MDT
How to Watch: Those in the United States can watch on ESPN Select. International viewers can find the game on the WPBL YouTube Channel.
