When news filtered through of Sunderland’s against-the-odds European qualification five minutes after the final whistle blew against Chelsea at the end of last season, it not only represented a piece of history being written before our eyes – it also opened up the kind of windows of opportunity that none of us had ever experienced.
It was a chance to grab that old red and white bull by the horns, run with it and establish Sunderland AFC as a regular top-ten competitor in the Premier League, with the ace
card of European football available for potential signings and our stock as high as anyone had ever seen it.
However, as we sit in a lowly league position midway through October, with questions piling up, unrest mounting and anxiety beginning to grow, those heady days now feel some distance away.
Sunday’s league loss to Bournemouth wasn’t the first time we’d tasted the bitterness of defeat this season, but it was almost certainly the most shambolic, disheartening and altogether disjointed loss we’ve had to suck up in 2026-27 so far.
A popular pastime in Sunderland circles is to use the phrase “meltdown” whenever concerns are expressed, but there was no getting away from the shabby nature of Sunday’s loss, and anyone who was rightly livid at what they’d seen shouldn’t have been skewered or accused of losing their heads.
Bar a heroic performance from Robin Roefs, we were absolutely atrocious on Sunday and, unlike the clashes with Manchester City and Arsenal, we couldn’t even cling to the belief that “If we play like that, we’ll be fine”. Indeed, play like this more regularly and we’ll be anything but fine. It really was that bad, and it continued a run of poor domestic form that’s threatening to undermine our league campaign.
Something simply doesn’t feel right about Sunderland at the moment.
The on-field body language of too many players appears negative; the form of several of last season’s leading lights has taken a nosedive, and despite what initially looked like Régis Le Bris’ efforts to oversee an evolution in playing style, it’s hard to say exactly what kind of team we currently are – neither organised and creative enough to play enterprising football, nor resilient and gritty enough to revert with any confidence to the style that worked so well last season.
In my view, this was entirely avoidable.
During the summer, with European football on the menu, the club becoming a hotter property than it has been for decades and everyone excited about what lay ahead, the chance was there to kick on, shift gears and really establish Sunderland AFC as a club that could mix it with the league’s heavy hitters.
Have we done that?
Have we maintained the standards that played a key role in our rise and preserved the hard edge that was often so key? At the moment, it doesn’t feel that way. Players who were dominant in 2025-26 have become timid this season, and collectively, it feels like a malaise has set in. That can’t be allowed to take root.
In my opinion, Le Bris’ position ought to remain relatively stable for the next two league games at the very least.
He’s steered us to two wins from two in Europe and has ample credit in the bank given what he’s achieved since 2024, but I also think it’s fair to say that this is the toughest challenge he’s faced during his time on Wearside and that the upcoming clashes with Leeds United and Coventry City may go some way towards defining the trajectory of our campaign and, by extension, the security of his position.
I don’t want Le Bris to be sacked, and I’d hate to think of this transformative, inspirational and history-making figure leaving Sunderland under a cloud, but the Premier League shows no mercy when head coaches find themselves in tricky situations, and that’s precisely where he finds himself right now.
With a leaky defence, a blunt attack, a midfield that’s not really functioning, players shoehorned into roles to which they’re not suited and the spectre of our most rounded winger, Chemsdine Talbi, looming over proceedings, Le Bris needs something to go his way or – perhaps harshly, admittedly – the grumbling will only increase in volume if European victories aren’t backed up with domestic wins.
Last season, we raved about these players as they took us on a thrilling ride into unexplored territory via some superb displays, iconic goals and memorable results.
Now that things have taken a downturn, blind faith isn’t an option, and we must all reserve the right to be critical if and when they don’t perform to the standards that had previously been set.
As a Sunderland player, accepting the acclaim and the glory is easy.
Negotiating the bumps in the road and the criticism that arises when things don’t go your way isn’t as straightforward, but Granit Xhaka and his teammates simply have to do just that and prove that last season wasn’t merely a fluke or a flash in the pan. They haven’t become poor players, but they’re currently performing poorly, and it needs to change pronto.
A big week awaits. Poland is the first destination. Let’s do our best to get another continental victory in the bag and make sure that we head into Sunday’s home fixture with something to cling to. Everyone needs that.
