Day one of the NCAA Eastern Regionals saw three Syracuse athletes advance to the next round in their quest to get to Eugene for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Jamir Brown won his opening heat in the 110m hurdles in a time of 13.45. He advances to Friday’s quarterfinal round (6:15 pm start) where twelve athletes will advance to the NCAA Championships Isaiah Hayes finished his season in 32nd place with a time of 13.98.
Benne Anderson took 3rd in his 1500m heat in a time of 3:48.85. Anderson will face in Friday’s quarterfinal round (5:15 pm start). Drew Zundell finished in 43rd place with a time of 3:53.44.
In the 400m hurdles, Elijah Mallard’s time of 50.63 seconds was good enough for 19th place and moves him on to Friday’s quarterfinal (7:25 pm start).
The final event of the night saw an unusual 10k race as instead of the usual tactical affair, three athletes pushed the pace with Louisville’s Elsingi Kipruto winning a new facility record time of 28:30. None of the Syracuse runners finished in the top 12 and saw their seasons end. Peter Walsdorf was 14th in 29:13, 20 seconds out of 12th. Assaf Harari finished 16th in 29:18 while Connor Ackley was 29th in 29:54 and Louis Small took 31st place in 29:59.
The women take to the track tonight and we’ll have that recap tomorrow morning.
