Well, everyone can take a breath now. A few weeks ago when the news broke that the Detroit Lions would not be picking up the fifth-year option for Jack Campbell, one of two first-round selections from the 2023 draft class along with running back Jahmyr Gibbs, there were certainly some uneasy feelings around the fan base. And rightfully so after the season turned in from Campbell in 2025 resulted in him receiving First Team All-Pro honors for the first time in his young career. Would the Lions be able
to continue their recent trend of drafting, developing, and retaining their young talent?
So far, through what is going to continue to be a crucial offseason for Detroit, that answer is yes. News broke Thursday afternoon that Campbell was signing a four-year extension with the team, keeping him in Honolulu Blue through the 2030 season. The deal makes Campbell one of the highest paid off-ball linebackers in the game, and keeps another piece of the Lions’ young core in place.
And now that Campbell’s deal is complete, I am sure Lions general manager Brad Holmes is setting his sights on the other remaining members of the 2023 draft class. That brings us to today’s question of the day—who do you think will be the next member of the class to get their deal?
My answer: For financially motivated reasons, I would hope it is Gibbs. We recently saw Miami Dolphins running back De’Von Achane get paid, setting the table for players like Gibbs and Atlanta Falcons running back Bijan Robinson to get their deals done. And while we are on the subject of Robinson getting paid, that brings me to my main reason why I want Gibbs to get his deal done next.
In recent years, the Lions have done a fantastic job of getting deals done at the right time, usually in an effort to avoid other market-setting deals influencing what they are paying their players. If you are looking for examples, check the timing of the extensions offensive tackle Penei Sewell and wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown signed.
What about you? Who do you think should be the next of the 2023 draft class to get their extension? Let us know in the comments.
