Manchester United will lose out on the race to sign Mateus Fernandes, per David Ornstein of The Athletic.
According to his report, Tottenham Hotspur is set to secure a move for the young midfielder after meeting West Ham’s asking price in the region of £85m in a guaranteed transfer fee.
United had been linked to Fernandes since the end of the 2025-26 season. Given West Ham’s relegation and need to raise funds, as well as the player’s own desire to move to a bigger club and stay in the Premier League, a deal always seemed likely for someone. However, the asking price from the Hammers was an issue for United’s negotiators. Tottenham went ahead and met the fee.
The Reds will need to looke elsewhere to secure a move for a midfielder this summer. The club hierarchy reportedly wants two midfield options this summer after signing Ederson from Atalanta, but the clock is ticking with the transfer window opening soon and the club’s own preseason beginning on July 9.
