Triple-A: Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (Marlins) 3, Norfolk Tides 2 F/10
Norfolk jumped ahead early with a pair of runs in the second inning, but the Tides let this one slip away late. Josh Walker allowed the tying run to score in the top of the ninth. Jackson Kowar prevented the Shrimp from claiming the lead in regulation, but Jacksonville took a 3-2 lead on a wild pitch in the tenth.
The Tides loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, and a rehabbing Jackson Holliday had a chance to send the fans home happy. Holliday worked ahead in the count, but he went
down swinging on a 97 MPH fastball in the zone. Norfolk went quietly in the bottom of the tenth.
Holliday finished 0-for-5 from the leadoff spot. The 22-year-old appears to be nearing a return, but the Orioles won’t rush him back for a bobblehead give away. The Baltimore Sun reported earlier in the week that Holliday was “still working through some things.”
Ryan Noda notched the only multi-hit game for Norfolk. Willy Vasquez recorded the team’s only RBI with a sacrifice fly. The Tides scored their first run on a balk.
Trey Gibson turned in a solid start with five innings of one-run ball. Gibson allowed four hits, struck out four, and did not walk a batter.
Double-A: Chesapeake Baysox 2, Erie SeaWolves (Tigers) 1
Unlike Norfolk, the Baysox managed to sneak out a one-run victory. Aron Estrada evened the score with a base hit in the fifth, and the 21-year-0ld delivered the go-ahead run with a walk-off single. Estrada finished 2-for-5 on the night, but he made the most of his two base hits.
Thomas Sosa finished 1-for-3 with a double and a walk. Frederick Bencosme and Brandon Butterworth both scored runs with matching 1-for-3 totals.
Starter Evan Yates held Erie to one run over 4.1 frames. Yates allowed three hits, walked a pair, and struck out five. Carlos Tavera, Zane Barnhart and Jeisson Cabrera combined for 4.2 scoreless innings of relief.
High-A: Winston-Salem Dash (White Sox) 8, Frederick Keys 3
Winston-Salem took control early with a four-run first inning. Frederick starter Carson Dorsey bounced back with three scoreless frames, but he took the loss after allowing three hits and four walks over four innings.
The Keys managed to trim the deficit to one, but the Dash stretched things out with another four-spot in the seventh. Chandler Marsh allowed the final four earned runs.
Braylin Tavera plated Frederick’s first run with a grounder, Colin Tuft scored on a wild pitch, and Colin Yeaman drove in the third run with an RBI double. Ike Irish finished 1-for-4, and Vance Honeycutt walked twice.
Low-A: Delmarva Shorebirds 7, Augusta GreenJackets (Braves) 2
The Shorebirds fell behind early before posting a crooked number in the third. Stiven Martinez, DJ Layton, Joshua Liranzo, and Edwin Amparo all drove in runs during a five-run third. Layton plated another with a fielder’s choice in the fourth, and Amparo manufactured the seventh run with a sacrifice fly in the eighth. Delmarva tallied nine hits, but Liranzo was the only Shorebird to record a multi-hit game.
Delmarva starter Kiefer Lord struck out 10 (ten!) batters over only 3.2 innings. He allowed four hits and two runs (one earned), but the former third-round pick featured some quality swing-and-miss stuff. Denton Biller and Todd Kniebbe kept Augusta off the board for the remainder of the game.
