Nathaniel Brown had as good of a competitive debut for Bayern Munich as you could ask for in their 2-1 win over Borussia Dortmund in the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup in German football’s curtain raiser for the 2026/27 season.
Bayern’s new man from Eintracht Frankfurt was deployed in an attacking midfield role from the start by Vincent Kompany in the Supercup, as the starting back line was comprised of Jonathan Tah, Kim Min-jae, Konrad Laimer, and Josip Stanišić. With what he’s shown at Frankfurt and the German
national team, it’s no secret that Brown has attacking abilities going forward, but he was, for all intents and purposes, started well out of position from his usual left back role, but made it work in Dortmund. He didn’t get off to the quickest of starts, but scoring the opening goal of the match in the 28th minute completely changed that and he cut a figure that’s completely used to playing in the number 10 role.
Speaking on his competitive debut for the German Rekordmeister to Absolut Bayern (via @iMiaSanMia), Brown described the elation he felt after scoring his goal and he wants to carry that momentum into winning more trophies with the club. “New position, new style. I’m not someone that scores goals every game. So the moment I scored and celebrated with the boys was incredible and very nice. When you play for such a big team, you want to win titles. That’s my goal as well. That [Super Cup] was my first, but I want to keep going,” the defender explained.
On the performance itself in the Supercup, Brown admitted that he felt it took him a little bit to settle in the match in the number 10 role, which he was rather shocked to have been used in so early on. “I don’t know whether that was the plan [all along]. In the early games in particular, I thought I’d be used at left-back. I didn’t get into the game very wellBut the goal help. ed me a bit and now I’m just delighted. When you score that goal, it’s just pure joy,” he explained after the win in Dortmund (via Bundesliga.com)
Just how much more Brown will be used as the number 10 is an open question that will have to get answered over the course of the season, but for Kompany, it’s a luxury to know that his left back possesses the necessary capabilities to do so when needed.
