The 2026 World Cup has already produced some remarkable moments, like debutants Cape Verde managing to reach the knockout stage, Cristiano Ronaldo scoring his first ever World Cup knockout stage goal, and Cape Verde’s inspiring performance against titleholders Argentina. There is another story pertaining the World Cup hosts specifically: the fact that all three managed to reach the knockout stage.
First, Canada defeated South Africa 1-0, earning its first-ever knockout stage victory. Mexico followed
defeating Ecuador 2-0, marking El Tri’s first ever knockout victory in 40 years. Finally, the United States managed to beat Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0, despite playing more than 25 minutes down to 10 men.
The three nations will now face an ever tougher challenge. Canada will kick off the World Cup Round of 16 later today against Morocco at Houston Stadium; Mexico, in turn, will receive England in a historical match at the Azteca this Sunday. Finally, the United States will battle against Belgium at Seattle Stadium next Monday, July 6 in a rematch of 2014. All three squads will surely take advantage of the home support while trying to inch closer to the World Cup glory.
