Newcastle United has generated significant transfer income this summer, but Matthias Jaissle’s rebuild remains incomplete, to say the least.
The Magpies have already brought five players in, but they continue to assess options across the field, including attacking options after Anthony Gordon’s departure and the struggles of last summer’s forward additions.
Regarding one of Newcastle’s floated targets, Manchester City head coach Enzo Maresca opened the door last weekend for Omar Marmoush to decide
his own future, acknowledging that the Egyptian wants more playing time after struggling for regular minutes last season.
“Players work every day, they want to play so when they don’t play they are not happy. Omar did not play a lot last year so his desire is probably to play more minutes,” Maresca said following City’s 3-1 preseason victory over Atletico Madrid. “It doesn’t mean that he isn’t going to play more minutes here but it’s also his decision, and he needs to decide.”
Those comments arrived just days after CaughtOffside’s Mark Brus reported Newcastle had rekindled its interest in the 27-year-old, who joined City from Eintracht Frankfurt for around £59 million (€67.7 million) in January 2025.
“Newcastle know they need to do some serious business up front,” a source told Brus. “Their forward signings last summer haven’t done it, there are already serious doubts about Nick Woltemade’s future, and Marmoush is someone they’ve got high up on their list.”
On top of that, CaughtOffside reported that City values Marmoush at around €60-to-65 million (£52-to-57 million), with industry figures believing Newcastle is particularly well positioned financially to meet that valuation following its major summer sales.
“He won’t come cheap, but Newcastle are under pressure to make a splash like that now, after recouping so much from player sales,” Brus’ source said. “There hasn’t been an approach yet, but it’s one to keep an eye on, for sure.”
Marmoush has certainly increased his chances of earning more opportunities at Man City or attracting a buyer during the preseason. He scored twice against Atletico on Sunday, but once real football starts to be played, it’s obvious he’ll lose his place to Erling Haaland in the Cityzens XI.
While Maresca stopped short of saying City wants to sell Marmoush, they seemingly are leaving the decision in the forward’s hands in a clear boost for Newcastle’s hopes to land him.
With the Magpies already interested, but no approach made yet, according to Brus, Marmoush’s willingness to seek a larger role elsewhere could determine whether this develops into something more concrete.
