The Virginia Tech Hokies (16-8, 5-6) are back on the road Wednesday for a critical ACC game against the No. 20 Clemson Tigers (20-4, 10-1). Virginia Tech badly needs a win after losing two in a row and three of its last four. While the competition has been stiff, with losses against Louisville, Duke and N.C. State, those are precisely the types of wins Tech needs to move off the bubble.
Clemson would be considered a Quad 1 win. Unfortunately, the Hokies will be without sophomore guard Tyler Johnson
again. Head coach. Mike Young believed Johnson would be back last weekend and, in his latest update, said Johnson was close, but would not make the trip to Clemson. In addition to averaging 10 points and five rebounds, Johnson is Tech’s best all-around perimeter defender and the definition of a “glue” guy.
Clemson has won four in a row and 13 of its last 14. The Tigers’ only ACC loss came against N.C. State, and their previous losses came against ranked foes, BYU and Alabama, and an upset loss to Georgetown.
The Tigers play elite defense, currently ranked in the top three nationally, so finding open looks will be challenging for a Virginia Tech offense that has been inconsistent. The Hokies have several offensive players who can score, but the offense often looks disjointed. What Tech needs most is consistent offensive production from forwards Tobi Lawal and Amani Hansberry. When Hansberry is on, the Hokies are tough to beat. Sophomore guard Ben Hammond has been terrific in ACC play, but was held scoreless in the loss at N.C. State.
Clemson has excellent size, led by a frontcourt of RJ Godfrey (6-foot-7, 240), Carter Welling (6-foot-11, 240) and Nick Davidson (6-foot-10, 235), but also features consistent guard play from Jestin Porter, Dillon Hunter and Ace Buckner.
