The 2026 edition of the FIFA World Cup has been nothing short of outstanding. The 48-team format, while highly scrutinized, has brought new nations such as Cabo Verde into the spotlight and created true miracle stories that fans will remember. Not all stories are about a particular nation though. This has also been a tournament of personal excellence.
While all the focus is on superstars such as Kylian Mbappé and Lionel Messi, and deservedly so, there is also the story of the unsung hero. That man’s
name is Yassine Bounou. The Moroccan goalkeeper has been simply outstanding this tournament. While the Moroccans were sent home after a 2-0 loss to France, that score could have been very different if it were not for the excellence of Bounou.
In fact, Bounou made history by having the joint-most World Cup penalty saves with four. Perhaps most impressive of all is when you consider that those penalty saves were among the likes of the Netherlands top players and none other than Mbappé.
Based on his performance, Bounou might have done enough already to secure himself as a top candidate for the Golden Glove award at the end of this tournament. While this feat is usually reserved for players from nations that advance to at least the semifinals, Bounou’s effort certainly stands out among the rest.
It won’t be easy to win over Spain’s Unai Simon though, who has yet to concede a goal at this tournament, as well as Argentina’s Emi Martinez.
While almost everyone has been rallying behind the Moroccon goalkeeper, fans of a certain co-host nation weren’t super happy with Bounou. The Montreal-born goalkeeper chose to represent Morocco over the Canadians, and it was Bounou’s brilliance that arguably made the difference when Morocco defeated Canada in the Round of 16.
That surely will leave a sour taste in Canadian mouths, especially adding the fact that Bounou used a Canadian passport when entering the United States for the match against Canada. A sign of disrespect or perhaps just ensuring a successful entry? Fans will never know that answer but Canadians could certainly have used Bounou at this tournament.
Based on Morocco’s performance at recent tournaments, you can’t blame Bounou for opting to represent Morocco, as they have been a powerhouse nation both in Africa and on the world’s biggest stage. After his performances at the last two World Cups, Bounou has certainly already cemented himself as a legend in his nation.
