The USA Basketball women’s national team defeated Spain, 76-66 in the semifinals of the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup on Saturday.
Washington Mystics guard Sonia Citron and forward Kiki Iriafen did not play in tonight’s semifinal. We mentioned before the tournament that as World Cup injury replacements, their playing time was likely going to drop once elimination games were underway. Breanna Stewart led the Americans with 16 points.
Mystics guard Alicia Florez scored 4 points in 19 minutes for the Spanish.
Maria Conde and Iyana Martin scored 17 each to lead Spain.
In the other half off the tournament, France beat Germany, 86-64 in their semifinal. This sets up a rematch of the 2024 Olympic final with the Americans playing the country that was first (in the Americans’ eyes) to recognize the USA as a sovereign state. The Gold Medal game is tomorrow at 2 p.m ET. Spain plays Germany at 10:30 a.m. ET tomorrow in the consolation game. Let’s hope that all the Mystics’ participants end up with a medal one way or another.
