It wasn’t pretty. Neither the Cleveland Cavaliers nor the Atlanta Hawks could establish any kind of offensive rhythm. But in the end, the Cavs had Donovan Mitchell playing at an All-NBA level. That was enough
to get them over the finish line on Sunday evening.
Things started well for the short-handed Cavs that were missing Jarrett Allen (finger), Sam Merrill (hip), Darius Garland (toe), and Max Strus (foot). They played some of their best basketball of the season to open the game as they went on a quick 16-2 run thanks to Atlanta continually turning the ball over. For three minutes, it felt like the Cavs were regaining their identity from last season.
Unfortunately for Kenny Atkinson’s group, that proved to be just a mirage. The offense once again struggled to get to the basket, couldn’t hit any threes, and was completely reliant on what Mitchell could provide.
Fortunately for Cleveland, Mitchell did come through.
Mitchell returned to his all-world form after missing Friday’s game with a hamstring injury. Atlanta didn’t have an answer for him. They couldn’t stay in front of him on the perimeter as he continued to rain off-the-dribble threes over the defense. Mitchell went 8-15 from beyond the arc en route to 37 points.
In the end, it was Mitchell’s incredible offensive performance that led the way to victory.
The Hawks were out of sorts on the offensive end without their point guard, Trae Young. They struggled to keep control of the ball. Their 22 giveaways and the 22 points the Cavs got off turnovers kept them from having a chance of stealing the win.
Evan Mobley didn’t have the offensive impact he’s had in recent games. He couldn’t find his shot as he went 6-16 from the field. He finished the game with 16 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and three steals.
Jaylon Tyson continued his string of good outings. He added 18 points in the victory. De’Andre Hunter contributed 15 points on 5-14 shooting.
The Hawks were led by Jaylen Johnson’s 23 points and 13 rebounds. Dyson Daniels provided 18 points in the loss.
The Cavaliers will have two days off before they host the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday. Sunday’s win brings their record to 4-3 on the season.
