For several concrete reasons, your favorite team’s first game of an NFL season is always a bit messy, unpredictable, and usually is not an exact indicator of how the remainder of the schedule will play out. Bad teams look good early; good teams look bad early. Last night, our Seattle Seahawks endured an injury at a critical position, a slow start, penalties (lots of them), and a feisty New England Patriots squad to eek out a notable victory in their home/season opener. The defending champions found
a way to win by pass rush, interceptions, and some nifty and timely play-calling from first time play-caller Brian Fleury. Jaxon Smith-Njigba, still disrespected despite winning OPOY last season, shouldered the weight of the offense to score a huge touchdown to tie the game late. Then, after Julian Love picked off Drake Maye (his second interception of the game), the Seahawks calmly marched down the the field, and despite themselves (a few odd procedural penalties, geez), kicked a FG to take the lead. From there, Coach Macdonald ratcheted up the Darkside and put enough pressure on the Pats to force Maye and Mike Vrabel into some bad decisions.
