Here’s a bit of a shocker for ya: Real Madrid are set to sign Marc Cucurella from Chelsea, as per an exclusive little “here we go” from Fabrizio Romano this afternoon. Oh my!
Romano claims that a “verbal agreement is in place between all parties”, including the player himself who has been quite adamant in recent interviews that he wanted to know nothing about anything that may be going on. So perhaps that was because something was in place already and there was nothing more going on!
While Cucurella
has been increasingly linked with exit rumors in the last couple months, Real were never really in the forefront of the picture. There were rumors linking the 27-year-old to Barcelona, Manchester City, and most recently Atlético Madrid, but apparently it’s the new Galactico Era Madrid who have gazumped them all.
Cucurella under José Mourinho? That’s the right energy.
Obviously, this is still just a rumor and it’s just a “verbal” agreement, which is often shorthand for future complications and things dragging on. There are at least a half-dozen tweets Romano can milk from this. Plus, Cucu’s busy at the World Cup at the end of the day, so it’s unclear how (and when) the logistics of this might get finalized — or how much the transfer fee might be. Chelsea were looking for at least €50m, but Cucurella rated himself at just €35-45m (which may have been a more informed guess than we might have imagined at the time).
