Las week started with the Las Vegas Raiders firing Pete Carroll as head coach so let’s end the week by getting onto some points made by general manager Jon Spytek that show this was doomed from the start.
Carroll and Spytek was essentially an arranged marriage and those pairing rarely work in the NFL.
Spytek was hired just before Carroll, so, while he clearly had the chance to be on board with the hire, he also didn’t have much time to play a major role in the hiring decision.
It’s was clunky hiring
decision to begun with Tom Brady was focused on Ben Johnson, who truly was always focused on joining the Chciaogo Bears. Tom Telesco was fired as general manager to help attract the coaching job to the likes of Johnson. It didn’t help.
Brady turned to Spytek, his college buddy and then they settled on Carroll. Both Carroll and Spytek went out of their way to say how their partnership would work and that held that mantra for months.
Late in the season, however, Carroll, basically admitted here was a disconnected between him and Spytek.
It was evident as Carroll wanted to win now (as the oldest head coach in NFL history) and Spytek’s moves in free agency was more geared to setting the roster up for the future. There was also a disconnect on how Carrol used the rookie class for much of the season.
This week, Spytek said it will be important for the new coach to be prepare to “climb a big mountain” that will not take a day to achieve. he also noted he wants the new head-coach to have power of his staff.
That lent credence to reports that Chip Kelly was forced onto Carroll by part owner Tom Brady, who will lead this interview cycle with Spytek.
There was just so many things that points that this was it a great pairing last year and in the end, the Raiders are hitting the reset button once again, hiring a new coach for the fourth time since 2022.
If happens again in the new future, Spytek likely won’t be around to discuss it.
