Earlier today, we posted this report detailing how Real Madrid was likely bailing from the race for Bayern Munich center-back Dayot Upamecano.
The initial speculation was that Upamecano would simply come
with more financial baggage than he was worth, which could alienate even rich clubs like Real Madrid. The rumored expectations from Upamecano’s camp are are a salary and annual bonus package ranging somewhere between €16 million and €20 million per season, a signing bonus worth €20 million, and a release clause that can be activated after only one year and would only cost €65 million.
Clearly, this is not a deal most clubs would entertain — and Real Madrid might have already made their declaration known. Per Mario Cortegana of The Athletic (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), Real Madrid thinks that whole package for Upamecano is “excessive”:
The financial demands of Dayot Upamecano are considered excessive by Real Madrid’s standards. The Frenchman is in talks to extend his contract with Bayern and is being pursued by other suitors such as PSG.
The entire “ask” from Upamecano’s camp seems like it could alienate every club aside of maybe Paris Saint-Germain. While Bayern Munich might still be contemplating taking the dive into such a deal, the market for the French defender could be cooling quickly.
