No matter how this 2025 season finishes up, you can’t say that this LSU team isn’t historic.
If losing to Vanderbilt for the first time since 1990 last week wasn’t bad enough, LSU followed that up with
its first home defeat to Texas A&M since 1994. Much like last year’s game, a halftime lead for LSU got flipped completely on its head in the second half and the Aggies ran Tiger fans out of Tiger Stadium.
Trailing 18-14 at the break, A&M outscored the Tigers 35-7 in the second half. LSU got a ton of breaks in the first half—two Marcel Reed interceptions, and a blocked punt that turned into a safety— and the thought was maybe there was some Tiger Stadium magic in store. Instead, however, A&M scored a touchdown on its first possession, returned a punt for a touchdown, and then scored two more touchdowns after that.
Tonight was almost a greatest hits album of the the Brian Kelly era (errors?) You want the special teams errors that marred 2022? LSU missed an extra point, KC Concepcion returned a punt 77 yard for a touchdown, and Terry Bussey averaged 34 yards on two kickoff returns.
You want to be mad about Matt House and the 2023 defense? How does surrendering 49 points at home sound? A&M ran for 224 yards at 5.6 yards a pop, and they still can’t do anything against a running quarterback. Marcel Reed lit LSU up to the tune of 108 yards.
And of course, the offensive woes from this year were on display. LSU allowed seven sacks and 11 TFLs tonight, and Garrett Nussmeier had nowhere to go with the ball (22/35 for 168 yards for a mere 4.8 yards per completion). But to me, the story of how tonight flipped so drastically lines up perfectly with the usage of freshman running back Harlem Berry. The five-star got his first career start tonight and in the first half had eight carries for 56 yards and a touchdown; but in the second half he got one carry. LSU got away from what worked and now their season is over and it’s not even Halloween.
Spending $50 million on a buyout check might be a tough pill to swallow, but watch this clip below and ask yourself how much does LSU stand to lose if this continues?
