Newcastle United’s football operation has undergone significant change over the past year, with Ross Wilson overseeing another stage of the club’s restructuring following the departures of experienced figures including Steve Nickson and Andy Howe.
Jack Ross has now confirmed that he has become Newcastle’s Assistant Sporting Director, effectively placing him directly beneath Wilson in the club’s sporting structure. He announced the promotion on LinkedIn.
“I am excited to share that I have moved to the
position of Assistant Sporting Director at Newcastle United Football Club,” Ross wrote.
The appointment continues a quick progression for Ross since he first arrived at Newcastle in March 2023 as interim Head of Coach Development. He later became Head of Strategic Technical Football Partnerships before being named Head of Football Strategy in July 2025.
In that previous position, Ross was responsible for Newcastle’s player-loan and emerging-talent strategy while also helping develop relationships with other clubs in the United Kingdom and overseas. The role involved creating additional development pathways for young players and working across Newcastle’s men’s, women’s and academy operations as the club attempted to establish a more consistent football structure.
Ross’s background extends beyond coaching and management, as he previously served as chairman of the PFA Scotland players’ union, worked with FIFPro and holds a master’s degree in economics from Heriot-Watt University.
