Luis Díaz may have been the missing ingredient to truly ignite Vincent Kompany’s Bayern Munich attack. Since the Colombian winger arrived last season from Liverpool, Bayern has been lights out—a threat from both wings, with Ballon d’Or winner Harry Kane content either to drop deep and create or maraud forward and score chances of his own.
This year, however, Díaz’s early absences and struggles have put the lack of cover at his left wing position in the spotlight. And it is not too early for Bayern
to be thinking about not only contingencies, but also a succession plan for the soon-to-be 30-year-old.
A name that is starting to crop up, and a player who is turning heads around Europe this season, is that of RB Leipzig winger and Norwegian international Antonio Nusa. Bayern board member for sport Max Eberl is reportedly a fan, according to Sport Bild, as captured by @iMiaSanMia:
Max Eberl is a fan of Antonio Nusa and is very convinced of his qualities – the name of the Norwegian winger was a topic of discussion at Bayern last summer, and Eberl would still like to have him. Nevertheless, a potential move from Leipzig is complicated as his transfer fee would be extremely high [@AgardiJulian, @cfbayern]
Nusa is off to an incredibly hot start this season, his third in the Bundesliga since moving from Club Brugge. The 21-year-old has four goals and six assists in league action alone, and that is just in eight matches. He also has a contract that expires in 2029 and what we can expect to be a long list of potential suitors.
In fact, here at BFW we have just been discussing Bayern’s attacking profiles, particularly pace on the wings, in the wake of the Bavarians’ 2-0 smothering of Atlético Madrid in this week’s Champions League midweek contest. Would a young, prolific talent such as Nusa — energetic and productive, though not necessarily an absolute burner — be at the top of the list of ideal transfer candidates next summer? The notion makes a lot of sense. The feasibility, though, remains to be seen.
