The United States Men’s National Team renew their rivalry with Mexico tonight in a friendly that is anything but warm and cozy. The USMNT have looked great in wins against Peru and Chile over the past week, while Mexico has settled for 1-1 draws against Colombia and Peru during that same period.
The two teams haven’t met each other since Mexico defeated the United States 2-1 in the 2025 Gold Cup final. There’s no trophy on the line here, but bragging rights are always at stake as Mauricio Pochettino
gets an opportunity to log his first win against a team ranked in the top 10 of the FIFA world rankings. While El Tri exited at the same stage as the USMNT at the 2026 World Cup, Mexico vaulted in the rankings to 10th and on the men’s side has started to re-establish itself as the team to beat in Concacaf. Mexico currently holds the trophy for each men’s competition on the senior international level and the youth international level. Those all used to be held by the United States, so the youth movement that has taken hold of this USMNT camp wants to make a statement that the future of soccer in this region runs through them.
