Immediately following Teofimo Lopez’s decision win over Rolly Romero, his father and trainer Teofimo Sr gave his reaction to what transpired in the ring and why he credits his son for coming out on top against a champion who fought in a negative style.
Teofimo Sr on his reaction to his son’s win
“I’m feeling amazing. You know, coming from a bad loss which really — I said it before, it was a wake up call for me, it really saved my life — and I’m happy to have my son with me now as a three-time world champion. Tough fight, Rolly didn’t come to fight tonight,
and I saw my son winning every round except the fifth round. I could give that round to Rolly, or maybe two or three rounds, but for a person to [score it a draw], which is ridiculous.
“He didn’t come to fight. People say my son has no power but Rolly must’ve felt it because he ran the whole night.”
On his advice to Teo during the fight
“I was telling him to double jab and hit him on the shoulder, hit him on the body, forget about the head. Double jab, we’re winning every round, you doing good. But the thing is I told him right before the fight ‘if you get hit with a good shot, that sh-t is going to wake you up, alright?’
“I knew he was probably going to get hit with a good shot but I had told him before we even started the fight. The whole plan was to just catch those punches that he would throw, catch and shoot. But my son wasn’t throwing the right hand as much as I wanted him to throw it but I think coming from a loss, a bad loss, to a win like this, he did an amazing job. It’s not easy to fight somebody that doesn’t come to fight, so I give him a lot of props.”
On where they want to go from here
“Now it’s going to be easier for us because Ryan Garcia is fighting Conor Benn. We can unify that and then get whoever is at the end, Liam Paro or Devin Haney.”
