Bayern Munich made hard work of it, but came away from the Ursapharm-Arena with a hard fought, 2-1 win over SV Elversberg, handing the newly promoted Bundesliga side their first loss of the season. The win takes Bayern up to fourth place in the Bundesliga table, level with FC Augsburg on seven points from three matches played.
Vincent Kompany made a handful of rotations to his starting lineup from the XI that started midweek in the Champions League win over Bodø/Glimt as Bayern have a shorter rest
than usual since their next match is this coming Friday against Union Berlin in the Bundesliga. English Weeks come thick and fast after that, when the international break is over, so we’ll likely see more of these types of rotations from Kompany as the season progresses.
Lennart Karl scored in his first Bundesliga start of the season, slotting home a perfectly weighted cross from Ismael Saibari in the 26th minute, but Maurice Krattenmacher scored a sensational equalizer in the 61st minute that put Bayern against the ropes a bit. Bringing all of Joshua Kimmich, Alphonso Davies, Jamal Musiala and Luis Díaz off of the bench in the 65th minute gave Bayern a new air of life and spark in its atttack, eventually leading to Harry Kane’s 72nd minute winner.
It was Kane’s first Bundesliga goal of the season and his 150th across all competitions for Bayern — a fitting milestone for a match winning goal for the England skipper, who’s odds-on favorite to win the Ballon d’Or next month in London.
Largely due to his match winner, Kane was officially voted Man of the Match in the winning effort, receiving 37% of the votes via the Bundesliga website, beating out Karl, Aleksandar Pavlović, Saibari, Michael Olise, and Krattenmacher.
For Kane, his goal takes his overall tally on the season to four across all competitions, but he’ll certainly be delighted to have opened his Bundesliga account for the season. The age-old gag from his Tottenham days that Kane doesn’t score in the league in August has held true to form this time around, but what a way to open his account with a finish that wins a massive three points for Bayern, shaking off the rust of last weekend’s goalless draw at Schalke.
