A lot can change in 12 years. As we know, “12” is a very significant number for the Seattle Seahawks and its fanbase, the “12s.” Quite fitting that the Seahawks won their second Super Bowl in franchise history
after a 12-year wait. This one had a different feeling for me than the first for many reasons, maybe the most important one being that I now write about the team for Field Gulls. Back in the LOB era, I was merely a Field Gulls lurker, consuming as much Seahawks content as possible. This time
around, I have the privilege of providing (hopefully) quality content to other fans across the globe. Writing a post-game recap article allows me to re-live the highs of a win, and gives me some catharsis in a loss. I watch games differently than I used to as a fan as I’m constantly thinking about what angle my article should take, filing away certain plays or players that I want to highlight, etc. I’d say I’m less emotional, but that definitely wasn’t true for a few of the games this season judging by my reactions in the moment. That’s the fun of being a fan!
Maybe it’s just down to the fact that I’m 12 years older, but my satisfaction with this Super Bowl 60 championship is rooted in different feelings. Back in 2013, I was just a young pup at 25 years old, the same age as many of the players. It was almost like my friends were taking the league by storm, and I was along for the ride. Over a decade later, and now the age of the coaches instead, I’m so happy for the players accomplishing their goals. I’m savoring it more this time, watching and reading everything I can. I love watching the players’ reactions and sheer joy. Last time all I could think about was repeating. Knowing how fleeting success is, I’m going to enjoy every second of this one.
On both a personal and professional level, I’ve been on quite a roller coaster since the beginning of 2025. Much of this is related to growing older and the curveballs that life throws at you – all of them seemingly with heightened responsibilities. Unfortunately, life doesn’t get easier as we age. The 2025 Seahawks were a wonderful escape full of hope and joy with only three Sundays’ worth of bumps in the road. No matter what else was going on, this team provided me with near-constant happiness for 10 months.
It really started back in April 2025 when I was able to get media credentials through Field Gulls to cover the NFL Draft in Green Bay, Wisconsin, a mere 40 minutes from my house. This once-in-a-lifetime experience was coupled with the fact that Seattle drafted a few of my favorite players – guys like Nick Emmanwori who would help catapult the team to a Super Bowl Championship. It felt like I was there on the ground floor, able to see Seattle’s vision for certain players manifest into a reality better than just about anyone could expect.
The start of the regular season coincided with me starting a new job – going back into the teaching world. Funnily enough, the last time the Seahawks won the Super Bowl I was in the midst of getting my teaching certification. For this run, I was back in the classroom with Seahawks gear on at every possible opportunity. My students have no confusion on where my allegiances lie, and I’ve been able to use examples from my time with Field Gulls to give some flavor to the topics I’m covering in classes like Sports and Entertainment Marketing. After the Seahawks won the Super Bowl, I was getting congratulated like I had something to do with it. Clearly, that’s not the case. However, maybe there’s another Field Gulls lurker out there reading my articles that will join the staff in the coming years and fulfill one of their dreams.
I started by saying that “12” is a very special number to all Seahawks fans. Well, “25” has always been important to me. It was my baseball number in high school, which was my favorite sport to play and will be coaching this spring. The last time the Seahawks won the Super Bowl, I was 25 years old. Maybe that’s why I had such a good feeling about 2025 when the year started. It certainly wasn’t the easiest year for me, but I know that I’m blessed to have the life that I do. No matter what life throws at me, the Seattle Seahawks provide me with joy in a way that only our favorite sports teams can. I will always be grateful to Field Gulls and to all of you readers for allowing me to cover this wonderful team and play some small part in everyone’s sports life. At the end of the day, the Seahawks victory in Super Bowl 60 felt just as good as the first, even if it hit me a little differently the second time around.
