Robert Lewandowski’s hopes of making it to the 2026 World Cup are over after Poland lost 3-2 to Sweden in their play-off final on Tuesday night.
Sweden took the lead through Anthony Elanga but were pegged back when Nicola Zalewski equalised. The vistors then restored their advantage before the break through Gustaf Lagerbielke.
Karol Swiderski levelled again for Poland but they were undone late on when Viktor Gyokeres grabbed a late winner to break Poland hearts.
It’s a tough blow for Lewandowski but
good news for his Barcelona team-mate Roony Bardghji as his team progress to the tournament this summer in the USA, Mexico and Canada.
Sweden go on to play Tunisia, the Netherlands and Japan in the group phase of the World Cup.
As for Lewandowski, he has a big decision to make on his future. His contract at Barcelona is expiring this summer and it’s not known yet if he will stay or move on.
