Hey, wanna see something cool?
The Big East has debuted SCENARIO CENTRAL. It’s an interactive tool which allows you, the fan, to muddle around with the results of upcoming games
and figure out what your team needs to do to get into the Big East tournament or clinch the regular season title or get a particular seed or whatever! Give it a whirl, it’s a hoot, and yes, it will be coming to basketball this winter. But for now, it’s particularly helpful for figuring out whether or not Marquette has the ability
to clinch anything any time soon. SURPRISE: Marquette can not clinch a conference tournament berth this weekend, nor does Marquette clinch anything merely by winning their last two matches in the regular season. With six points at 2-4-0 in league play, the Golden Eagles need a lot of help to find their way into the conference tourney, and that’s fine. It’s still possible, and that’s what’s important here.
It’s just not going to be FUN, and that’s because Marquette is visiting St. John’s this weekend. Guys, I just have bad memories about having to play at Belson Stadium. This is the history of MU/STJ in New York:
2005: St. John’s, 1-0
2010: Marquette, 3-1
2013: Draw, 0-0
2015: Draw, 0-0
2017: Marquette, 1-0 (2OT)
2021: St. John’s, 4-0
See, (almost completely) ZERO FUN, especially that 2013 scoreless draw while the Golden Eagles were on their way to a second straight NCAA tournament and ranked #16 in the country.
And now we need Marquette to get a win to stay alive for a conference tournament berth right here and right now. If you click around in Scenario Central and set all the other results around the league against the Golden Eagles, they are eliminated with a loss or a draw on Saturday. Even if you give MU more favorable results, losing to the Red Storm renders next week’s finale against Akron meaningless.
So, yeah. All we need is Marquette to win a third Big East match for the first time since 2021 in order to make next week matter….. when they probably need a fourth win to make it happen.
FUN TIMES.

Marquette is 5-4-3 against St. John’s. Thanks to the advent of divisional play in the Big East because Akron is our friend now, this is MU’s first meeting with St. John’s since 2023. MU hasn’t beaten St. John’s since 2022, they haven’t played in New York since 2021, and they haven’t won in New York since 2017….. and they haven’t won in regulation in New York — which is relevant since the NCAA has now eliminated overtime — since 2010.
St. John’s is right there in the mess with Marquette for a conference tournament berth as they’re setting on eight points at the moment. They’re lucky to be there, to be clear, as they were riding a four match winless streak where they didn’t even score a goal up until — and I swear to you all of this happened — scoring three goals in the final 8 minutes and two seconds of a 3-2 win over UConn. This includes the game winner by Luca Fargnoli with just five seconds left in regulation. You can go watch this insanity, it’s available for replay on ESPN+. I mean this very seriously: UConn’s Kyle Durham has a goal kick with 17 seconds left. The ball is rapidly departing the goal St. John’s is aiming at at 16.9 remaining according to the clock on the screen, and somehow they scored. The crazier part is that Durham HURRIES that goal kick. I guess the Huskies needed those points for a Big East tourney berth as well, but my man, eat it for the draw and find out what happens after that.
That game winner makes Fargnoli the top scorer for the Red Storm. That’s his team leading fourth goal of the year and along with his one assist, that’s a team high nine points, too. Fargnoli is tied for the team lead in shots with Ander Gonzalez, who hasn’t scored yet this year. Three assists, though, and the freshman from Mexico had one of those on the game-tying goal against UConn.
Nico Bezama has played every minute in net for St. John’s, and since he’s allowed all 23 goals, his stats aren’t so hot. That’s 1.53 goals per 90 minutes of action and a save percentage of just .657. That’s, uh, not great, so if the Golden Eagles can mount anything resembling a functional offense — MU has 10 Big East goals, but scored four each against DePaul and Butler — then they might have a chance to get one past Bezama and get out of Queens with three points.
