No. 7 TCU picked up a win on Senior Night this past Sunday against Iowa State by a score of 3-1. The Horned Frogs bounced back nicely from a loss to Colorado, where they struggled to find the back of the net,
with a win that saw three different players score a goal. The Horned Frogs are tied for second place in the Big 12 with a conference record of 4-1 and an overall record of 10-2.
TCU created the first chance of the game with shots from Cameron Patton and Sydney Becerra in the third minute. AJ Hennessey gave the Frogs an early 1-0 lead in the seventh minute with a goal off an assist from Kamdyn Fuller. Fuller did a great job of keeping an offensive possession alive and Hennessey collected a loose ball in the box and buried the shot.
The TCU offense struck again almost immediately with a goal from Patton in the eighth minute with Hennessey and Quinn Cornog picking up the assists. Hennessey made a great leading pass to Patton who made a nice cut to beat a defender and finished the play with a goal.
Kamdyn Fuller was the next Horned Frog to record a shot in the 23rd minute before both teams went eight minutes without a shot attempt. Seven Castain broke the drought with a goal that extended the lead to 3-0 in favor of the Frogs in the 31st minute. Kaela Martinez set up Castain on a beautiful give and go exchange and was credited with an assist on the goal.
Lainey Swanson next recorded a shot that missed high before a Cyclone penalty in the box gave TCU a penalty kick in the 40th minute. Morgan Brown’s attempt was saved by the Cyclone goalkeeper to keep the score at 3-0. Swanson recorded another shot in the 43rd minute that missed and TCU led by three goals heading into halftime. It was a dominant performance all around by the Horned Frogs in the first half, as they netted three goals and held Iowa State to just one shot, which missed the net.
Fuller had the first chance of the half for either team with a shot on goal in the 52nd minute that was saved by the Iowa State goalkeeper. Both offenses then hit a bit of a lull, as neither team recorded another shot until the 69th minute, when Sophie Forrester cut into the lead with a goal for the Cyclones. Cate Sarinopoulos looked to restore the three-goal lead with a shot on goal in the 74th minute that was turned away by Iowa State.
Filippa Hoegild recorded a shot for the Horned Frogs in the 82nd minute as the TCU defense continued to limit scoring chances for Iowa State with the Cyclones failing to record another shot on goal. This game was an excellent response for the Horned Frogs who allowed just two total shots from the Cyclones and recorded 12 shots and three goals of their own. The Horned Frogs have an important road game up next on Friday at 7 p.m. against Texas Tech who currently sits at the top of the Big 12.
