English side Manchester City were found guilty of 115 charges of breaching the financial rules of the Premier League, and a possible sanction is stripping them of their league titles, among other punishments. Jürgen Klopp, former Liverpool manager and current Germany head coach, heard of it and gave a measured response.
“Of course I’ve heard about that, but I haven’t given it much thought,” Klopp said with a laugh (as captured by X account @iMiaSanMia). “I can only wait and see. I have big respect
for Pep Guardiola and City’s style of football; they played fantastic football and were a top class opponent for us. If any sanctions are handed out, I have nothing to do with it; I’ll wait and see. I’m far from preparing for a title or anything like that. I’m absolutely fine with what we’ve achieved in Liverpool. We fought hard on the pitch. I can’t say more about that because I don’t know the details and I’m not interested in them.”
Man City isn’t the only club being investigated at present. Spanish side FC Barcelona is also in hot water after Real Madrid prodded UEFA to get moving with the Negreira case. To quickly describe this case, Barcelona paid around €7.4 million to José María Enríquez Negreira, a former vice president of the Spanish FA’s Technical Committee of Referees, from around the start of the millennium to around 2018 or 2019. These payments are alleged to be bribes to ensure high favorability towards the Catalan club.
