Herbert Hainer commented on Manuel Neuer and his position in the goalkeeping hierarchy in an interview with Bild, saying the 40-year-old will get over his faux pas in the 2-2 draw away against Augsburg.
“It was of course unfortunate,” Hainer said (as captured by X account @iMiaSanMia). “Manuel Neuer was and is one of the best goalkeepers in the world. He got us points in so many games. Mistakes like yesterday can always happen. I’m convinced it has nothing to do with his age, it could’ve happened
to him even at 20. He’ll get over it, and we’re happy that we have him.”
For context, Neuer took two bad touches from kickoff that Augsburg player Robin Fellhauer pounced on, thus conceding the fastest-ever goal in Bundesliga history. On Augsburg’s second goal, he parried a shot straight to an Augsburg player after sloppy Bayern defending allowed the home side to carry the ball up the pitch. Although Bayern clawed back to draw 2-2, they potentially could have won that match if it were not for an egregious refereeing decision disallowing a goal—and three more on top of that.
