Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn is on hand for the Glory in Giza card taking place this weekend in front of the Eygptian pyramids, headlined by a heavyweight fight between Oleksandr Usyk vs Rico Verhoeven. Speaking to iFL TV during a press event, Hearn shared some thoughts on the main event itself and Ryan Garcia announcing a fight with Conor Benn in a couple of highlighted excerpts.
Hearn on Usyk being a big favorite over Rico
“Like, anybody’s a big outsider against Usyk, but especially someone who’s not a professional boxer. I mean, he’s been
at the top of his game in kickboxing, and to be fair a lot of great fighters have come from a kickboxing code. Listen, he’s live in this fight because he’s a big lump and he can punch and he’s got big balls — but he is fighting one of the greatest fighters of all time and he’s got a mountain to climb and he’s going to have to do something spectacular. But look at the backdrop, and this is where spectacular things can happen.”
On a supposed fight between Ryan Garcia and Conor Benn
“[Benn] is not very well known [in the United States] at all but he’s very well known in the UK. So, look, that’s a big fight. I don’t think it’s going to do massive numbers in the US but I think globally it’s an exciting fight, be a good build-up. Conor’s great on build-up, so, yeah, I think it’s a big fight. Sometimes people think a fight’s bigger than it is but like I say, it’s not going to do massive numbers in the America but it’s a fun fight.”
