Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany is expecting a challenge SV Elversberg and definitely a different look than what Schalke 04 provided the Bavarians last week in a 0-0 draw.
“We played against Schalke last week and will play against Elversberg this week, and both teams were successful in different ways [in the second division]. Elversberg relied more on possession and solutions with the ball, while Schalke focused more on counter-pressing and transitions. This is clearly visible in the data,”
Kompany said during his press conference (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “We’re taking every game seriously. I’m happy that we’re playing against Elversberg and that we get to compete against this team. Every season brings new challenges. I’m always happy to learn new things about an opponent, coach, and club. That’s something I love about football. There’s only one thing: no matter where we go, we always want to represent FC Bayern. It’s a new location for us, but we still want to show the same FC Bayern.”
SV Elversberg coach Vincent Wagner was originally slated to miss the game due to a red card suspension, but the ruling was overturned. While Kompany did not want to talk about the actual red card, which was assessed because the referee thought Wagner came on to the field at halftime to confront him, rather than meet the SV Elversberg players.
Thankfully for all involved, cooler heads prevailed.
“I don’t want to talk about the red card. But I’m glad that my colleague will be on the sideline tomorrow. The most important thing for us coaches is to be able to support our teams on the weekend,” said Kompany.
As far as the squad goes, Serge Gnabry’s status is still in question, but he could be ready for the SV Elversberg tilt.
“Serge is training but we’ll make a call today. I reckon he’ll be involved tomorrow or against Union, but we still need to have conversations with Serge. He needs to give us the signal that he doesn’t feel that something might happen when he shoots or turns. That aside, everyone’s fit and available,” Kompany stated.
