It’s one game.
It is really easy to overreact to the Texans’ performance on Sunday after losing a nailbiter. There was a lot to love about the game (the offense looked downright competent until the fourth quarter), there was a lot to hate (the secondary and Reed Blankenship in particular were hideous), and there was a lot of “what the hell did I just watch?” (the rest of the game).
It’s one game.
There are no data points to connect here. We don’t know what the Texans are yet. The secondary gave up 334
yards and two passing touchdowns to Josh Allen, much of which came from explosive plays which the Texans simply didn’t have an answer for. The defense gave up more points in the season opener than they did all of last season. But we don’t know if this is what we should expect from the Texans defense or if it was a blip. If it wasn’t a blip, however, this team is in much bigger trouble than any of us thought.

The offense looked sharp through most of the game and aside from the bad plays by Stroud to bookend the game, there was a lot of encouraging signs from them. David Montgomery ran for 60 yards and two touchdowns (and hauled in a third through the air). They got the hard yardage that they failed, consistently, to get last season. There’s some good news in this.

We will know more about this team in the next 2-3 weeks. Until then, just remember: it’s one game.
