Fiorentina will retire the famous 10 jersey in its centenary year as an olive branch to Giancarlo Antognoni. The legendary playmaker’s relationship with the club has soured over the past few years and he’s threatened to skip the celebrations. It’s a sad state of affairs when the greatest player in Viola history is so mad at management that they refuse to participate in what should be a joyful occasion. That’s all I have to say about that.
What I’m really interested in is the 10 shirt itself. Albert
Guðmundsson has worn it for the past couple years but will have to find a new one. That’s fine by me. I’ve made no secret of my opinion about him and seeing the sport’s most hallowed number on his narrow shoulders is a constant, low-level irritation. It did get me thinking, though, about all the 10s in Fiorentina history. I enjoyed thinking about it so much that I made a tier list.
A quick bit of history. Serie A teams started wearing numbered shirts during the 1939-1940 season. Back then, every starting lineup was numbered 1-11, meaning players would cycle in and out of squad numbers through the season. The FIGC mandated annual squad numbers ahead of the 1995-1996 season, setting up the system still in use and leading to Rui Costa’s teammates pranking the absolute hell out of him.
While I don’t have data for a full century of number 10s, I was able to check Transfermarkt going back to the 1950-1951 season, when 4 players rotated through it. In total, there are 50 guys listed who’ve worn it, which is a lovely round number for a centenary. I didn’t think I’d be able to rank them 1-50 so I’ve gone for tiers instead, taking into account impact, length of tenure, and how large a portion of Viola history they hold. That might sound subjective but it’s not. It’s all very scientific and I’m not sharing my trailblazing methodology with anyone but the Nobel committee. You can rest assured it’s completely and unimpeachably correct so no arguing is allowed.
Tier 1: All-time greats
Giancarlo Antognoni (1973-1977, 1979-1984, 1986-1987): His current feud with the club aside, there’s a reason he’s l’unico dieci for now and forever.
Roberto Baggio (1986-1990): He didn’t win the club any trophies and his Ballon d’Or came after he left Florence but you can’t tell the story of calcio without him.
Rui Costa (1994-2001): The platonic ideal of the 1990s trequartista and maybe the finest playmaker of his generation.
Tier 2: Stars
Miguel Montuori (1955-1957): El Artillero wore 8 and 9 as well throughout the course of his storied career, which was cut tragically short when he got hit in the face with a ball and suffered permanent vision damage aged just 28. Had he gotten another couple years, he might well have led Fiorentina to silverware and moved up a level.
Kurt Hamrin (1957-1958): He’s an all-time great without a doubt but mostly played on the wing and thus sported the number 7.
Giancarlo de Sisti (1965-1970, 1973-1974): Only the old-timers remember Picchio but 8 seasons with Fiorentina, including a key role in the second scudetto, make him one of those hallowed names. He was more of a metronomic passer than a playmaker but gets credit for his attitude and general cuteness, as well as returning to coach the Ye-Ye teams of the early 1980s.
Adrian Mutu (2006-2011): You all know that I’m a Mutu fetishist. What did you expect?
Tier 3: Good servants
Egisto Pandolfini (1951-1952): A regular for club and country, he also wore 8 and 9 at times during his 4-year tenure.
Guido Gratton (1955-1956): 6 seasons as a regular in some magical teams but he was always part of the supporting cast behind guys like Montuori and Hamrin, often in a deeper midfield role. Has the Italy caps and the scudetto, though, to remind you of his class.
Amarildo (1967-1968): He helped fire Fiorentina to its first scudetto but was more about moments than sustained excellence, scoring 16 goals across 3 seasons. Probably more of a Milan legend than a Viola one. He’s also the last surviving participant in the 1962 World Cup final.
Claudio Merlo (1972-73, 1974-1975): A deeper midfielder than what one might usually associate with the 10, he was the tempo-setter for the second scudetto run. He only scored 29 goals across 345 seasons but he’s got the 6th-most appearances in club history as a regular for 11 (!) seasons.
Massimo Orlando (1990-1994): Never hit the predicted heights, largely due to injury, but boasted technical excellence and selflessness during those early Cecchi Gori years.
Anselmo Robbiati (1994-1995): Never the most prolific but he helped get Fiorentina back to Serie A and had some memorable nights, particularly in the cup competitions, while mostly serving as Rui Costa’s backup.
Alberto Aquilani (2012-2015): The Aquaman was the most mercurial of the 3 tenors but when he was on song, he was marvelous. Bonus points for coming back to win silverware as Primavera coach.
Federico Bernardeschi (2015-2017): Calling him a good servant is obviously not quite right but he was the centerpiece of the attack for a couple (pretty lean) years. I also have it on good authority that he’s grown into a genuinely nice man so I’m willing to put it all down to youthful idiocy.
Gaetano Castrovilli (2020-2023): He’ll always be an almost, a what-if, but his determined returns from his constant injuries and underrated work without the ball elevate him in my mind, even if he never came close to the ceiling I saw for him.
Nico González (2023-2024): One of the least 10ish 10s here as a player who relied on his physical excellence but he spearheaded the attack in his own inimitable way for years and deserves a ton of credit for keeping the Viola in Europe.
Tier 4: Cult figures and steady contributors
Rodolofo Beltrandi (1951-1952): He earned 47 appearances with 10 goals across 4 seasons but never secured a regular role.
Dan Ekner (1951-1952): As far as I can tell from the game logs, the Swede was the first man to pull on the 1o shirt for Fiorentina. He also played in England, France, Spain, the Netherlands, and the US.
André Roosenburg (1951-1952): The 9-time Netherlands international scored 17 goals across 3 seasons, throwing hands with defenders and getting banned in his home country for playing professionally.
Luigi Milan (1959-1961): Struck a brace in Glasgow against Rangers and another in the return leg to lead Fiorentina to the 1960-1961 Cup Winner’s Cup. Was mostly a bit part player outside of that season but he’s about as cult a figure as you’ll find.
Renato Benaglia (1964-1965): More of a regista than a trequartista but was a regular presence in his 2 seasons in Florence.
Mario Brugnera (1965-1966): Had 4 productive seasons (32 goals in 94 games) but is more famous for helping turn Cagliari into a deeply unlikely Serie A champion in 1969-1970 and is definitely more of their legend than ours.
Vincenzo Guerini (1975-1975): He was more of a holding midfielder and never anything approaching a star but he was a solid backup and is undefeated as Fiorentina manager so he gets a little extra boost, even if he never really deserved the 10.
Antonio di Gennaro (1976-1977): Had the misfortune to be an attacking playmaker while Antognoni was at the club. The pair never figured out how to coexist on the pitch and di Gennaro left the club. He was very good, helping Hellas Verona win the scudetto in 1984-1985 and leading Bari to promotion and the capture of the Mitropa Cup, but his Viola tenure was sadly muted.
Daniele Massaro (1983-1984): He’s best remembered as one of the key figures in those 1990s Milan sides under Arrigo Sacchi but he spent 4 years in Florence as one of Antognoni’s runners, although he only scored 15 goals in that time.
Eraldo Pecci (1984-1985): Took over the 10 in the last of his 4 seasons in Florence. He vacillated between solid and good but mostly played under Antognoni’s shadow.
Sergio Battistini (1985-1986): He was quite good as a player but split time between rightback, holding midfield, and sweeper. He mostly wore 4, 5, 6, or 13 for the Viola, at least, but I simply can’t get behind a defensive player wearing 10.
Roberto Onorati (1985-1987): Looked a promising youngster blessed with pace and technical ability but never put it together, scoring a single goal in 92 appearances across 4 seasons before establishing himself at Genoa and enjoying a fine career.
Diego Fuser (1980-1981): Milan loaned him to Fiorentina for his single season and he flourished, scoring 9 goals from the wing. Would’ve been a great guy to have around for the Batistuta and Rui Costa era.
Luboš Kubík (1990-1991): Hell of a player with a wild backstory. Scored 9 goals across 2 seasons in Florence while playing primarily as a sweeper. I have to dock him a couple points for that. A centerback shouldn’t wear 10, even a goalscoring libero. Just ain’t right.
Fabrizio Di Mauro (1992-1993, 1994-1995): The veteran midfield schemer enjoyed a decent run, earning 3 Italy caps in his first season at the Franchi, but never hit those heights again.
Cristiano Zanetti (1994-1995): A promising youth player, he made just 5 senior appearances before leaving in search of regular playing time. The Viola should’ve kept him around, as he ended up being one of the better registe of his generation, earning 17 caps while turning out for the likes of Roma, Inter Milan, and Juventus. He came back to Florence in the twilight of his career as part of the Felipe Melo move and helped his old side, which was fun.
Riccardo Maspero (2003-2004): He was winding down his career when he joined Florentia Viola in Serie C2 and provided depth in the promotion push to Serie B, making a further 17 appearances before ending his professional career.
Hidetoshi Nakata (2004-2005): He wasn’t great in Florence but he’s so cool. Walk into any bar with a Nakata Fiorentina shirt and your social capital doubles.
Stefano Fiore (2005-2006): Formed a good relationship with Luca Toni that propelled the Viola to 4th until the Calciopoli scandal saw the league dock them 19 points and nearly sent them down to Serie B. That mayhem ensured that first-year sporting director Pantaleo Corvino didn’t redeem his loan, which is a shame on purely nominal terms.
Tier 5: Uh oh
Pietro Maiellaro (1991-1992): Following 4 fantastic seasons at Bari, he arrived at the same time and for nearly the same price as Batistuta and was expected to create the chances for him and Mazinho (double whoops). Instead, he was shuffled off to Venezia the following summer.
Dunga (1991-1992): A fantastic player but anyone who’s ever seen him play knows that, excellent as he was, he was nothing resembling a number 10. If this was about pure talent and impact, though, he’d be in that second tier.
Domenico Morfeo (2001-2002): In hindsight, buying a hyped-up youngster when the tridente of Batistuta, Rui Costa, and Lulu Oliveira was already in place was a mistake. There were some bright moments but the arrival of Edmundo rang down the curtain on his time and he spent the next several seasons getting farmed out on loan, where injuries and a prickly temperament meant he never fulfilled his potential.
Santiago Silva (2010-2011): Inheriting Mutu’s number would’ve been a tall task for anyone. Handing it to a 31-year-old journeyman was a disaster. El Tanque scored, at least. Once. From the spot. At the death. In a truly insane 3-0 win over Roma that featured 3 red cards. But hey, nice penalty.
Rubén Olivera (2011-2012): A jobbing hardman midfielder, he became a target of mockery as the 2nd consecutive bald Uruguayan to hold the 10 shirt for no good reason. He took 5 the following season, which fit his persona much better, but also yikes, man.
Valentin Eysseric (2017-2018): Never a good sign when you can’t beat out Cyril Thereau’s washed carcass for minutes but that’s what happened. It’s no coincidence that Val’s brief apotheosis occurred when he was wearing 92.
Marko Pjaca (2018-2019): I feel bad for Pjaca, who was a ballyhooed prospect done in by knee injuries and whose body was obviously not up to the task at that time. But handing the 10 shirt to a Juve loanee just a year after Bernardeschi lit it on fire on the way to the Juvenuts wasn’t a good look for anyone.
Kevin-Prince Boateng (2019-2020): The first number 10 of the Rocco Commisso era, he brought name recognition but not much else. He scored once while playing a bit part and moved to Beşiktaş in January. Even so, I remain rather fond of him for reasons I can’t articulate.
Albert Guðmundsson (2024-2026): Again, I just don’t like the guy and I don’t think his Viola tenure can be graded as anything but a massive disappointment given his price. I think he perfectly reflected last year’s team and that’s about as far from a compliment as I can make it.
