Newcastle United spent much of the summer dealing with speculation surrounding its biggest names and selling most of them, but the Magpies managed to keep one of its most valuable young players in tow despite persistent links with Manchester United.
England international Lewis Hall ultimately remained at St. James’ Park amid endless speculation of a possible move with a supposed offer in the realm of €60, but Matthias Jaissle has now made clear that Newcastle sees the 21-year-old as an important part
of its long-term plans.
The Magpies manager, however, expects interest in Hall to return when the transfer market reopens, so it’s not that Hall is locked into a long-term black and white future.
“For sure, he will also have interest in winter, like many other players,” Jaissle said. “Every window there will be interest for players from us, definitely.”
Newcastle’s stance throughout the summer was that Hall was not for sale. Jaissle delivered an emphatic “no chance” when former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel raised the possibility of a move last month, while club sources similarly maintained that Newcastle would not sanction his sale.
The fears of yet another damaging exit were obvious and understandable, given Newcastle lost Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes in a span of two months.
“We count on him. He’s a huge, huge potential player,” Jaissle said. “He’s delivering already on a high level, but we all know that there’s much more to come. And we are really excited that he is a part of that team, and hopefully also in the long term.”
Hall has already demonstrated his importance during Newcastle’s unbeaten Premier League start, but his woes have cost the Magpies. He conceded a late penalty in the 2-2 draw against Liverpool, only bouncing back a bit with a good defensive performance as Newcastle defeated Tottenham 2-0 away last weekend.
