If you did not know the name David Jones Garcia before last summer, you’re not alone.
David Jones Garcia played in three different colleges before going undrafted in 2024. He spent a few months on with
two-way contracts in Philadelphia and Utah, but saw only minor G-League action interspersed with stints with the Mexico City Capitanes.
Last summer, he joined the San Antonio Spurs in Summer League earning All-Summer League first team honors. The recognition nabbed him the final two-way contract for the Spurs despite a logjam with ball-handlers.
Jones Garcia didn’t just have a drive to make his way into the NBA, he had a promise to fulfill.
In 2023, he made told his father he’s play in the NBA. This vow was made before the elder passed away from heart failure. Ever since, Jones has been honing his craft, awaiting the opportunity.
Thus far Jones Garcia has played in six games with the Spurs, having a breakout performance last Thursday helping the Spurs beat the Atalanta Hawks.
The G-League All-Rookie showed composure, confidence, and acuity on his way to 12 points, 6 assists, 5 rebounds, 3 steals, and 1 block in 19 minutes.
Today, David Jones Garcia turns 24. He’s somewhere on the road between Phoenix and Portland as the Spurs face NBA Cup competition Wednesday against the Trail Blazers.
Happy birthday, David.
