Bayern Munich continued a perfect start to its Frauen-Bundesliga campaign with a 1-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt. It is now six wins out of six for the Bavarians, who were tested but eased their way to a superior showing against the second-placed team in the table.
Facing injury on top of match congestion, Barcala opted for heavy rotation after a taxing Champions League bout midweek. Alara, Sophie Proost, and Edna Imade were all elevated to the starting XI while Momoko Tanikawa and Linda Dallmann
were afforded a chance to rest from the start.
Two of Bayern’s star forward players, Klara Bühl and Pernille Harder, went the distance. It was Bühl who provided the winning touch, latching onto the end of a superb long ball from opposite winger Proost before driving forward, steadying herself, and finishing with an emphatic coolness that has become a hallmark of the German international’s game.
Bühl showed herself to be on quite another level throughout, flashing her penchant for assists with numerous heads-up crosses and cutbacks in the danger areas, though none of them would find a teammate to supply the finishing touch. She came close in stoppage time of the first half with a deft jink inside the box to pull back for Pernille Harder, but the ball was intercepted before the Danish forward could pounce.
In the second half, Bayern settled into a steady if not entirely convincing phase of control. With the scoreline unsettled at 0-0, the chance was always there for the home side to rally. Rebecca Blomqvist came close late on with a dangerous ball flashing flat across the face of Ena Mahmutovic’s goal; it would have been a tap-in had anyone been there at the far post. The Bayern keeper had three strong saves on the day, none past the hour mark, to preserve the win and the clean sheet.
Bayern will be monitoring an injury to right-back Giulia Gwinn, who slipped awkwardly on the turf in the 82nd minute as she went for a challenge. It does not appear to be too serious.
That’s it for the FC Bayern Frauen until October 19th, when the Bavarians host Stuttgart. In the meantime, it is the international period, with the German women’s national team playing just one match: a friendly vs. Australia on October 9th in Karlsruhe.
