Only 22 1/2 hours after tipping off in Austin against the Houston Rockets, the Spurs have headed up IH-35 to face their other in-state rival, the Dallas Mavericks,
while still in search of their elusive first win of the season. They won’t have any excuse not to get it tonight, with the Mavericks also coming off the second night of a back-to-back and sending out an extensive injury report that includes Cooper Flagg, Derek Lively and Santi Aldama as out and Spurs-killer Kyrie Irving and Zaccharie Risacher as questionable.
No new injuries were added for the Spurs, who should be hungry for win number 1 after getting embarrassed on opening night against the Thunder and suffering a heartbreaker at the buzzer last night when Amen Thompson blocked Victor Wembanyama’s game-tying attempt. The Spurs showed plenty of improvement in that game from game 1 but still ultimately shot themselves in the foot with poor free throw shooting.
Regardless of the two losses, it hasn’t felt like there has been any reason to panic since we already know what this team is capable of. Against the Thunder, it was a case of the Spurs just being extremely cold from three while the OKC could hardly have been hotter, while they simply needed to make the free throws to beat Houston and didn’t. A banged-up Mavs squad feels like the perfect opponent to get right and then go from there.
Game Prediction
De’Aaron Fox does NOT get in any kind of squirmish for the first time this season.
