Bayern Munich remain insatiable despite battering Atalanta BC in the Champions League. The Bayern manager Vincent Kompany broke down important aspects of his team’s performance. The team’s balance and constant goal threat were appreciated by him as the Bavarians reaped the reward of intense training sessions.
Hunger and Danger
VK praised his team’s performance on a big night. “That was the performance we hoped for. I’d even say we could’ve scored another goal or two. I think we were very dangerous in attack all game.
It was a good mixture: playing the ball simply into feet at times, but also running in behind at times. That hurt them today”, said Kompany (FCBayern.com).
The attacking department of Bayern were nothing short of sensational against Atalanta. Despite playing without Harry Kane, there was never a dearth of chances or shots. The Bavarians created 8 big chances and took 25 shots on the night. With two shots hitting the woodwork, VK is not wrong about another goal or two that Bayern could have gotten.
Exquisite talent and meticulous preparation
Despite being in the 16th place in the group stage, Atalanta had conceded fewer goals than several teams placed above them. La Dea are an intense side who love to take the battle to the opposition. But, there was a major flaw. You can’t really solo man mark Bayern’s players. There is just too much quality and pace for one person to stop. The likes of Luis Diaz, Michael Olise and Jamal Musiala have run circles around multiple defenders. One person was never going to be enough to stop them all night. A constant hounding by groups of players would have been a better option. But, the home-side decided to stick to their strengths and that proved to be a fatal mistake. The midfield and attack of Bayern made 17 key passes and 11 dribbles.
Atalanta’s strategy was expected and was well prepared for by Kompany’s men. “We have talent and quality in the team. It’s easy to talk about our plan and so on – Atalanta also have a plan – but we have the guys who like it in games like this. Fronting up one-v-one isn’t a problem for them. We also play with very high intensity in training, so it’s not a surprise when we’re able to find solutions against this type of defending in these matches. They did that superbly (on Tuesday),” remarked Kompany.
