Barcelona manager Hansi Flick confirmed that the club is planning to sign a defender in the January transfer window after Andreas Christensen’s ACL injury.
Speaking at a press conference on Friday, the coach recognized the difficulty of bringing in players in the winter window but also made it clear there’s a depth issue at the back, and said a signing will be made as long as it “makes sense”.
“That’s a tough question. We’re not ready yet. When you look at our back line, with center-backs and full-backs,
we need another player. But we have to talk about it, and it’s difficult to bring in a quality player in the winter transfer window. I’m confident we can do something, but it has to make sense.”
Barça have been linked with pretty much every center-back alive over the last two weeks, and there appears to be some truth to the rumors of a possible reunion with João Cancelo, which is why I found it interesting that Flick mentioned center-backs AND full-backs as targets for January.
Signing a defender is an absolute must this winter, and Barça have to get it right if they want to have enough depth for a deep run in every competition this season.
