The Yankees took care of business in last night’s series opener against the Nationals, ninth inning notwithstanding. It’s officially at least a minor winning streak after a rough rivalry weekend. Now Luis Gil will try to make it three in a row while getting back in the strike zone and the left column against struggling southpaw Mackenzie Gore.
Gil, as alluded, was a little shaky in his last start against the Red Sox. While he only allowed one run over five innings, he walked five batters. Obviously
free passes will always be a factor with Luis, but he can’t allow them to spiral out of hand, especially if he wants to go deep into ballgames. His overall body of work through his first four starts has been solid, but we’re still waiting to see the dominant version that took the league by storm especially in the first half of last season.
Gore is a 2025 All-Star (and one of the many players dealt to Washington for Juan Soto in 2022) who has struggled mightily in the second half. He was the league leader in strikeouts at the break, but his effectiveness has waned as hitters have timed up the fastball. As Peter noted in our series preview, his ERA post-Midsummer Classic sits near 8.00. The lefty hasn’t been completely devoid of strong performances though, as evidenced by a scoreless six-inning, ten-strikeout day at Oracle Park earlier in the month. The Bombers hope they can avoid that dominant version of Gore tonight.
Anthony Volpe returns to the lineup tonight, as his recent performances c0ntinue to come under heavy scrutiny. Amed Rosario will draw the hot corner assignment against a tough-if-scuffling southpaw, and lefty masher Paul Goldschmidt will lead off. Austin Wells will catch tonight and Giancarlo Stanton will play right field with Ben Rice, Jasson Domínguez, and Ryan McMahon taking a seat—at least to start.
