The Seattle Seahawks suffered their first loss of the season in a 33-31 upset against the Washington Commanders, and there’s now some money that will be lost by a couple of veteran players for their actions during the game.
DeMarcus Lawrence, who’s no stranger to playing the Commanders after a long career with the Dallas Cowboys, was extremely fortunate to get away with roughing the passer against Marcus Mariota late in the second quarter. Mariota completed a pass to Terry McLaurin after getting whacked
in the face by Lawrence. No penalty was called, but the league still fined Lawrence $17,111 for an illegal hit on the quarterback.
Special teams ace and fullback/H-back Brady Russell was also fined for an uncalled penalty in the same quarter. On a Michael Dickson punt, Russell can be seen running over Commanders tight end Colston Yankoff (No. 80) after the ball was fair caught. That will cost Russell $11,111 for an “away from the play” violation.
Can’t really argue too much with either of those decisions. The TV broadcast made it clear that Lawrence got away with a helmet shot, whereas the All-22 of Russell’s infraction is clear-cut. Neither of these offenses will count toward a possible one-game suspension based on the new rules. And lest anyone think that Michael Dickson got roughed, his kicking leg returned to the ground and the contact was not deemed severe enough to warrant a flag.
There were no fines for any Commanders players.
