For much of the season, Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson has taken Wednesdays off as he dealt with a variety of injuries.
But this week, he trotted out to the practice field with Tyler Huntley on Wednesday afternoon, a positive sign for his availability for Sunday night’s season-defining matchup with the Steelers.
Head coach John Harbaugh expressed optimism about Jackson’s status on Monday, noting that his condition improved
throughout last week. The eighth-year quarterback was in visible pain immediately after injuring his back against the Patriots in Week 16. By the end of the Ravens’ win in Green Bay on Saturday night, that did not appear to be the case. It’s worth noting that Jackson is unlikely to have received an injection for pain during a game in which he was not playing.
This is by no means definitive proof that Jackson will be ready to play on Sunday, but it is another encouraging sign.
However, any optimism around Jackson’s avalability on Sunday night should be cautious. In 2021, Jackson returned to practice in Week 17 after missing two weeks with an ankle injury, but was not able to play in the last two games of the year. The Ravens’ season was on the line then, as well.
Jackson was seen wearing protective gear at Wednesday’s practice, indicating that he is still working through his back contusion. He may be trying to get an idea of what his capabilities are – as he did in 2021 – and it would not be surprising to see him sit out Thursday’s practice. Friday would then be a clear indicator of his likelihood to play.
It remains to be seen if Jackson was a full or limited participant in today’s practice. The Ravens’ first Week 18 injury report will provide that information later this afternoon.
But make no mistake: Jackson knows what is on the line on Sunday night. If he can play, he will.
