To date, there have been 54 times WWE’s lowered a four-sided steel chain-link structure around its ring (and a small bit of a the ringside area) for a no-disqualification match it calls Hell in a Cell. A great many have featured either The Undertaker or Triple H, but 46 other men and 5 women have taken part in a notoriously punishing match.
Drew McIntyre was in his third Hell in a Cell a couple years ago. In an interview with The Hall of Fame’s Brad Gilmore from his recent ReelShort promotional tour,
McIntyre ranked his loss to CM Punk at Bad Blood 2024 as not only his best, but one of the top two ever.
It’s only competition, per Big D? The original between Undertaker and Shawn Michaels at Bad Blood 1997.
“From a story perspective, from a match perspective, I’ll argue all day: it’s one and two between us and ‘Taker and Shawn, the first ever Hell in a Cell.”
It’s not an out-there take. Undertaker putting Mick Foley through the cage in Pittsburgh might be the most famous/infamous Hell in a Cell, but Punk/McIntyre and Taker/HBK are very highly rated. For whatever it’s worth to you, they’re two of three Hell in a Cells (along with torn pec Cody Rhodes vs. Seth Rollins at Hell in a Cell ‘22) to get 5 Stars from Dave Meltzer in Wrestling Observer Newsletter.
But this is the internet, so there’s no way that can be a universal consensus. What’s your ranking of the top Hell in a Cell matches ever?
