Maryland wrestling had an impressive weekend at the Southeast Open, earning multiple podium finishes, including Branson John’s 197-pound first place finish.
John put up four straight bonus-point victories, and took down some ranked opponents in the process — he defeated No. 29 Gavin Nelson from Minnesota, and No. 27 Rune Lawrence from West Virginia.
Redshirt senior Braxton Brown and sophomore Oscar Williams both made runs to the finals in their respective weight class brackets. Sophomore Abram Cline
also made a strong run, earning three straight decision wins before ultimately placing second.
One Maryland wrestler — Dario Lemus — placed third after winning three straight en route to a major decision in the consolation final. Meanwhile, two Maryland wrestlers — Sepanta Ahanj-Elias and Tyler Garvin — came in fifth, with Ahanj-Elias winning a decisive 12-4 major decision.
