Barcelona and Villarreal look set to play their La Liga fixture in Miami after UEFA admitted this week that the game could go ahead in the United States.
The decision to play games overseas has already
attracted plenty of criticism, and Dutch legend Marco van Basten has now claimed that “it’s cheating.”
“Why on earth is Villarreal vs Barcelona played in the USA. What are we doing. Is this a comedy show?” he said on Ziggo Sports. “It’s completely ridiculous. And it’s cheating too by the way! For me this translates to the complete bankruptcy of La Liga. Uefa has to stop this from happening.”
UEFA seems to agree after reluctanly agreeing to let the game go ahead. Europe’s governing body also said it’s “regrettable” that Barca’s game will be switched and insisted they do not want to set a precedent as “league matches should be played on home soil.”
A second game will also go overseas in February when AC Milan will play their Serie A match against Como in Perth, Australia.
