Once a fairly competent team, the iteration of Liverpool at least in the beginning of the 2025-26 season looks unrecognizable. With a single point earned in eight matches, you have to wonder where the buck
stops.
No wonder they fought Chelsea tooth and nail. They always do this, but today they looked like a completely different team. And so did we, with several periods of ball retention turning into nothing.
Alyssa Thompson did break the pattern less than 10 minutes into the match with a superb effort although VAR would likely have ruled it out. However as it’s often the case with this team under Sonia Bompastor, they didn’t make use of momentum swinging their way. They would pay for it in kind with Beata Olsson tying the match in the first half on a one-v-one created on a fast break and a string of passes never in risk of being broken by the Blues.
In the second half the barrage of attacking subs were able to put a bit more pressure on Liverpool’s defence. We were still toothless upfront, and Liverpool were able to match our chances on the fast breaks that sent the entire team into havoc.
- Livia Peng between the posts since Hannah Hampton is injured.
- Unstable lead from a shaky Chelsea team that led to the obvious: Liverpool’s tying goal.
- Manchester City are now four points clear of us in the Women’s Super League table.
- Next up: Barcelona at home in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.
