The transfer window has slammed shut and that means it’s time to submit the squad registration for the first phase (“League Phase”) of the Champions League, which is set to begin in a couple weeks, after the international window.
The rules are the same as before: (up to) 25 players on “List A”, with 8 of the 25 spots reserved for homegrown players, half of whom have to be “club-trained” as opposed to just association-trained. The other 17 spots can be any combination of homegrown and non-homegrown.
(Same rules as in the Premier League, with the exception that the Prem doesn’t make the distinction in the homegrown flavors.)
“List B” for Europe can be any number of under-21 players (born 2004 or later), as long as they’ve been at the club for at least two consecutive years since age 15 (or three with one loan season in England).
That latter rule means that either Gaga Slonina or Facundo Buonanotte would have had to be left out … so it would appear that we left them both(!?) out. Huh?
I’ve been hoping that someone would come up with a reasonable explanation over the course of the day yesterday, but I’ve yet to see one and I still can’t quite make sense of why we registered only 23 players (which is more like 21-22 given the injuries to Levi Colwill and Liam Delap). We have left a non-homegrown spot open for no obvious reason…
(And it’s naught to do with our UEFA settlement and extra FFP monitoring: if we were in violation of squad cost controls, we would’ve not been able to register any of our new players.)
non-HG (14): Badiashile, Caicedo, Cucurella, Essugo, Enzo, Estêvão, Fofana, Gittens, Guiu, Gusto, Hato, Jörgensen, Neto, Santos
association-trained (6): Delap, João Pedro, Garnacho, Palmer, Sánchez, Tosin
club-trained (3): Chalobah, Colwill, James
List B (3): Acheampong, George, Lavia
