The New England Patriots decided to bolster their depth for their upcoming Week 6 game against the New Orleans Saints. As was announced by the team on Saturday, running back Terrell Jennings and outside
linebacker Truman Jones were both elevated from the practice squad to the game day roster.
Jennings, 24, first arrived in New England as a rookie free agent out of Florida A&M last offseason. The 6-foot, 217-pound runner spent the majority of his first season in the NFL on the Patriots’ practice squad, before being promoted to the 53-man roster. In total, he appeared in three games in 2014 and carried the ball 13 times for 33 yards.
Jennings again competed for a roster spot this summer, but had to start his sophomore campaign on the practice squad as well. With fellow running back Antonio Gibson tearing his ACL on a second quarter kickoff return against the Buffalo Bills last week, however, he is in line to see his first game action of the season on Sunday.
The expectation is that he will serve as a complementary third back behind Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson.
Jones, 25, started his career as an undrafted free agent with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2023. The Harvard product and Massachusetts native returned to New England in December 2024, and by the Patriots’ season finale had found his way to the 53-man roster. He ended up seeing action in one game for the club, playing 26 snaps between defense and special teams and registering two tackles.
Jones made a serious push for a roster spot again this summer, but ultimately was released ahead of the cutdown deadline. He was added to the practice squad the following day and has remained there ever since.
With the Patriots missing both Keion White and Anfernee Jennings this week, he will now get his chance to make his season debut. Jones projects as the fourth edge behind Harold Landry, K’Lavon Chaisson and Elijah Ponder.
Per NFL elevation rules, both Jones and Jennings will automatically revert to the practice squad after the game.
Kickoff between the Patriots and Saints at the Caesars Superdome is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET on Sunday.
